This season’s Autumn Auction offers a sweeping panorama of Bulgarian art, uniting historical resonance with modern daring. At its forefront is Jaroslav Veshin’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand on the Hunt (1891), a monumental work of both artistic and historical significance, capturing the mastery of one of Bulgaria’s foremost painters of the late 19th century. Nikola Tanev, the great chronicler of Bulgarian urban and provincial life, is represented by three exceptional oils. The expansive "Courtyard in Karlovo" (1930) radiates his trademark luminosity, while "Karlovo Market" (1940s) and "Street in Plovdiv" (1928) vividly transport the viewer into the rhythms of everyday life. The auction also embraces the imaginative vigor of Bulgaria’s 20th-century innovators. Dimiter Buyukliiski-Mitchi’s "Mirage" stands as a powerful testament to his dreamlike and expressive language, while Stoyan Tsanev’s "Summer Night" conveys a lyrical abstraction imbued with mystery. Dimitar Kazakov Neron, one of the most original voices of the avant-garde, is represented by "Antique Composition", a synthesis of myth and symbol. Completing this arc is Bozhilov Slona’s "Landscape with Horses", where surrealistic overtones meet folkloric inspiration. Together, these works trace the breadth of Bulgarian visual culture, from the ethnographic precision of Veshin and the radiant modernism of Tanev, to the bold experimentation of the postwar vanguard.
