Emerging from the very beginning as a sensitive colourist, for whom the world of shapes dissolves in light and colour, artist Ciucurencu will become the author of a luminous vision. He will emerge on the Romanian art stage during the 1930s, in a period of intense artistic antagonism, when Impressionism was a domineering presence in Romanian painting. Imposing himself with a great strength, the artist will introduce the autonomy of colour, applying the principle of elaboration and plastic organisation. His language will consist of new organisation interests, surface orchestrating and ordering, paying a special attention to colours and their emotional traits, along with the simultaneous importance of the social and ideatic meanings of the subject matter. His paintings' centre of gravity will be the representation of the human being, of nature and the objects from his intimate sphere. Another innovation will be the plain frontal approach of the subjects, a measure which will respond to geometry and arithmetic, urban constructions and contemporary thought. Starting from the late '30s, his creation will indicate an impetuous paintbrush, along with a rich and concentrated palette. Colours will be more intense and of a sound vibration and will begin to define more concrete shapes. The genres approached in this stage of creation will be: still life, nudes, character composition, etc. (G.M.)
