With a work built around the life of mankind, and sensitive to the social phenomena he takes part in, artist Octav Băncilă creates an art inspired by credible reality, where countrymen, factory workers, Jews and nomad Gipsies would become the most prominent leading characters. Strongly realistic, vigorous, vivid and strengthening, Octav Băncilă's painting sheds light on the authentic aspects of his time, in addition to the artistic value, presenting a social and historical interest. A special place in his creation is held by those works inspired by Jewish and Gypsy lives, often evoking scenes featuring nomad carts travelling to faraway lands, as well as several portraits of card readers, witches, fortune tellers, fabric menders, shoemakers or usurers.
