With paintings inspired by the truth of life, Ressu's work will be created under the seal of visual realism, where the clear and truthful will predominate. The abandonment of academic forms and the approach to the "primitive", a phenomenon characteristic of the beginning of the 20th century, will give rise to a rapprochement between artists and folk art, embraced in turn by Ressu, who will place village life at the heart of his creation. He will portray it in countless poses, illustrating the Romanian village in solemn realities. His preoccupations as a colourist, noticed since his first exhibitions, will reveal a great concentration on chromatic matter, highlighted by capturing the multiple vibrations of nature, as well as light, obtained through local colour, which the artist will treat in bold harmonies. Intense expressions and chromatic flashes, along with combinations of pictorialism and constructivism can also be seen in the work "Pe malul Dunării" ("On the Danube shore"), presented in 1913 at the artist's first personal exhibition, held at the Romanian Athenaeum, when he exhibited several works on this subject. The artwork will also be presented in the travelling retrospective exhibition in Bucharest, Târgu Mureș, Cluj and Galați in 1955, as well as in the posthumous exhibition, dedicated to the centenary of the artist's birth, at the Museum of Art of the Socialist Republic of Romania, Bucharest, in 1982.
