An ex-voto is a votive offering given to a saint or a deity, either in fulfillment of a solemn promise, or as a sign of gratitude and devotion. The term comes from the Latin expression "ex voto suscepto" ("as a result of the oath made") and is mainly used in the Christian tradition. Ex-votos are deposited in churches, chapels or pilgrimage sanctuaries, as testimony of the help or miracle received. They can take various forms: descriptive texts, representations of a healed part of the body, or symbolic objects, such as crutches left by healed persons. The tradition of ex-votos dates back to Antiquity, including in ancient Egypt.
