Ciro Spontone’s book is complete, having 16 sheets + 351 pages. The book binding
is made of cardboard plates wrapped in brown marbled leather. The book spine contains
printed ornaments of typographical compositions and successions of gilded vines. Artistically,
the orderly graphic aspect draws the attention; the frontispieces, the ornate initials and the vignetetes,
but particularly for the engraving on the title page, performed by Ciro Spontone, an Italian writer and poet, originally from Bologna. Over his lifetime, he
held the position of secretary of the governor from Ancona, C. Boncompagni, of L. Bentivoglio from
Castelo, of the duke of Nemours from Turin, of the marquis Marco Pio of Sassuolo and of
the marquis of Castiglione, Rodolfo Gonzaga. During his time in the service of Gonzaga,
he wrote the book on the war in Transylvania. For a brief time, he was also a governor in
Rovigo, and between 1600 and 1610, he was a secretary of the Bologna Senate. He wrote, among other things, the poem
Nero (1588), Hercule difensore d,Homero (1595), Dodici libri del governo di Stato (Verona,
1599), La corona del principe (Verona,1590), Il Bottrigaro (Verona, 1589) e Hercole difensore
di Homero (Verona, 1595), a comment on Tasso’s poetry (Verona, 1587), and Attioni de’
re dell’Ungheria (Bologna, 1602), the famous Metoposcopia, and Historia della Transilvania
(Venezia, 1638). The book Historia della Transilvania is of real interest for the history of
Romanians and of Michal the Brave (Mihai Viteazul). In fact, as a secretary of Austrian secretary Basta, he wrote
his memories, under the notified title, which he printed in 1638 at Venice, in the printing house
of Giacomo Sarzina. Historically, the military memorial provides an impressive fresco
of the social-economic, political, and military realities in the
Carpathian-Danube space during the time of Mihai Viteazul. An original copy, it contains significant engravings and decorations, it is
well-preserved and it has special patrimonial value.
