His work includes a vast collection of landscapes, similar to the work at hand. "Curte la Mangalia" (Yard in Mangalia) is inspired by the time the artist spent on the shores of the Black Sea. The Dobrujan theme is easily recognisable in some of his works, in the form of streets, cafes, yards, cemeteries or churches, depicted with ink and watercolour on paper. Tonitza is famous for something that is called "colour memory". The first thing he does is perform a preliminary survey of a splinter of everyday life with the purpose of later depicting it on his canvases. His works still have a sense of actuality: the artist used the canvas as a means of expression and colour as a code in an instance of communication. His graphically-dominated works have sometimes been said to bear a close resemblance to those of Manet or Toulouse-Lautrec. In his endeavour to seek meaning and to humanise, Tonitza’s canvases depict urban landscapes. The line used is calligraphic and it serves to describe the portrayed objects, sometimes meanderingly and sometimes directly. For him, art aims to educate its viewer both intellectually, as well as spiritually. His fine language is closely connected to the present, with painting being elevated to the dignity of attitude towards life.
