Octav Băncilă outlined his entire work around three essential periods. To begin with, we can talk about a research phase, where the artist focuses on the use of colour in order to highlight the content of the work. Empathetic and considerate to the sufferings of those around him, the artist passes objective events through his own filter and illustrates them on his canvases. This is how the second period of Băncilă's works comes to the fore - the one teeming with revolutionary content. He assumes the capacity of proletariat representative and renders the anguish, revolt and helplessness according to reality. He avoids excessive pathos, does not abstract and does not idealise; he only relies on the realism combined with states of mind. He is capable of depicting the condition of an entire social class in a single painting. The chromaticism of the middle period is slightly subdued. During his latter stage, he would spend less time reacting to what is happening around him and deal with rather neutral topics. In the work at hand, Băncilă brings to the fore the man who carries out his work. The chosen chromatic is dark, sharp, expressionistic in nature. Shades of red and tile-colour are predominant; accents are highlighted, while shades remain in the background. Lines are dynamic and vibrant, but the composition has a hard, harsh and oppressive aspect.
