The origin of the title Chiriacodromion can be found in the Greek language: kiriakos-kiriaki = Sunday, Sunday sermon or Homiliary. The first initiative to print such a collection of homilies belonged to Varlaam, the Metropolitan of Moldova, realized in 1643, in Iași, with the help of the ruler Vasile Lupu; the book will remain in the consciousness of the Romanians with the title of Varlaam's Homiliary. If in the case of the Homiliary the content includes 74 sermons, the Balgrad Chiriacodromion includes a number of 81 homilies, being a volume in 4° format, with [3] pages and another 415 numbered pages, the printing being made with black and red in the case of the title page, the rest of the text being rendered in black. The text on each page is framed in a linear border. The typographer of the book was Mihai Iștvanovici. On the back of the title page, the coat of arms of the Balgrad Metropolis was printed. The preface attests to the publishing of the book with the support of the Bălgrad Metropolitan Church and the Domain of Walachia. It is important that this book came about with the expense of Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu. The cultural patronage of the Voivode (the "common good") is highlighted by the scholar typographer in the preface of the book: "to Constantin Brâncoveanu Basarab Voivode, who has shown (and always shows) himself to be a luminary of the Orthodox faith, reinforcing it with divine books, in every way printing them, who is a true patron of the holy Metropolis of Transylvania and of all those who strive under his mercy, your saints did not forget your request, but after the desire of your saints and the honored congregation not happening so far Romanian here in Transylvania, master for the work of typography, His Highness had mercy for the love of the holy church to send me to serve his holy and the holy congregation, what would be lacking to the holy churches by possible to be filled...". The paper used to print this relatively large book has a particularly varied provenance, as several types of paper (paper mills) have been identified through watermarks, be it Italian, Austrian, French, German, even possible Polish paper (the possibility of using some Transylvanian paper is not ruled out). The print run does not seem to have exceeded 1,000 copies, which is still a relatively large print run for that period. Following an initiative of the metropolitan assembly, it was established that the sale price of a book copy would be 20 zlotys [guilders], a relatively large amount for the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
