Obverse: S LΛDISL | ΛVS RЄX, Saint Ladislaus standing facing, an axe in his right hand and a globe in the left; Reverse: MΛThIΛS D | GR VnGΛRIЄ, the seated figures of the Madonna with the Child, a raven with a ring in beak underneath (symbol of the Corvins). Born in Cluj on February 24, 1443, Matthias Corvinus was the second son of the Romanian voivode John Hunyadi. Known in Hungarian as Hunyadi Mátyás, in Latin as Matthias Corvinus, in German as Matthias Corvinus, and in Croatian as Matija Korvin, he became one of the greatest kings of Hungary, reigning between 1458 and 1490. His long rule was marked by economic stability, cultural and artistic prosperity, but also by numerous military campaigns against neighbors, including a confrontation with the Moldovan voivode Stephen the Great in 1467, which resulted in the defeat of King Matthias Corvinus. Over time, numerous legends and myths have emerged about Matthias Corvinus and his connection with his native city, Cluj, outlining his image as a protector of the common people, often known under the name "Matia the Righteous". At his death on April 6, 1490, in Vienna, people said that "with Matia's death, Justice also died."
