As the son of a prominent Romanian diplomat, Andrei Cădere suffered after the establishment of the communist regime in Romania, having a marginal existence, posing among other things as a model for some of Corneliu Baba's paintings. He left Romania in 1967 and settled in Paris, where he died in 1978. Alongside Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich, Andrei Cădere was included in the major retrospective exhibition dedicated to abstract art and anti-figuration at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, 2015. "After Brâncuși, Cădere is the only artist from Romania who counts in the contemporary art", notes Erwin Kessler in an article published in "Revista 22" (22 Magazine) on the occasion of the opening of the retrospective exhibition "Peinture sans fin" at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in 2008. While Brâncuși's work has remained locked within the paradigm of modern art history, Andrei Cădere's influence on performance art and contemporary abstract art has grown considerably in recent decades. The artist is known for his tenacity in pushing institutional boundaries: at first, by "parasitizing" openings and events to which he was not invited by placing his wooden bars, then by imposing himself with his own exhibitions. In 2009, at the 53rd edition of the Venice Biennale, curator Daniel Birnbaum's central exhibition "Making Worlds" was based on a selection of 90 artists who, ideally, would not perceive art as an object or commodity, but as a way of rethinking the world. Among the works that attracted attention were: William Forsythe's 200 hanging gymnastic rings; Mike Bouchet's floating house; Yona Friedman's map-city; Andrei Cădere's mathematical and painted round wooden sticks. Seemingly forgotten by chance in various spaces, the artist's 1970s performance is recreated. For example, a work by Cădere was inserted in a space dedicated to the German artist Öyvind Fahlström. Too little researched, the works made in Romania up to the time of his departure constitute a luminous and avant-garde enclave for artistic creation of that period, putting Romania in sync with Western trends.
