The icon represents the Mother of God, who holds Baby Jesus in her left arm, whilst with her right hand she points to him (type Hodighitria). However, some peculiarities, namely the fact that the Virgin Mary has her head bent toward the child, with a pondering gaze, and Baby Jesus is rendered in semi-profile and not frontal view, frame this type of presentation as being of the Mother of God with Baby Jesus from Tihvin or Tihvinskaia. The face of the Mother of God is rendered with a long oval face, with large eyes shaped like fish scales, strongly contoured and underlined by dark circles, with arched eyebrows, elongated toward the temples, with a straight and thin nose, a small mouth underlined by the shadow of the lower lip The model is made from a painting starting from a brown-reddish shade and going through a tinted range of umbers towards the bright parts of the face. The child’s face and hands are painted in the same manner. The Virgin Mary wears a purple-red veil draped in angular folds, on which the three symbolic stars (rosettes) are painted. Baby Jesus is clothed with red hatchings himation. With his left hand he is holding a rotulus, and with his right hand he is signalling a blessing. The image of the Mother of God with Baby Jesus is monumental, clipping against the golden umber background of the icon. Below, on the wide frame of the icon, two small sized saints rendered standing are painted.
