The ruler Mihai Viteazul (1593-1601) achieved the first union of the Romanian Lands. He enjoyed European fame thanks to the alliances and treaties he signed, the most important of which was with Emperor Rudolf II of the Habsburg Empire, to whom he acknowledged himself a vassal in order to achieve his strategic goals. In the context of this alliance, this engraved portrait of the ruler was produced to popularise his figure. You can read the inscription: "Michael Waivoda Walachiae Transalpinae, Utraqve Fortuna Insignis: Et In Utraq. Eadem Virtute Aet. XLIII". The work was made by the Flemish engraver, painter and cartographer Egidius (Aegidius) Sadeler the Younger (1570-1629), employed by Rudolf II as an artist at the Imperial Court. Sadeler created this work inspired by nature because he met the Wallachian ruler in Prague. The item is in a very good state of preservation. It was purchased by the literary critic Șerban Cioculescu from the Dimitrie A. Sturdza collection. Engraving on copper.
