Metodă nouă de scriere și cetire" ("New Method of Writing and Reading") for use in the first primary class, also known as Creangă's Abecedarian, was a didactic work written by Ion Creangă, in collaboration with his teachers colleagues C. Grigorescu, Gh. Ienăchescu, N. Climescu, V. Răceanu and A. Simionescu. It was released in Iași, in 1868 and had 23 successive edition until 1893. In the period and subsequently until the Inter war period, the system allowed for parallel textbooks, so the abecedary circulated with other such textbooks. After the Union in 1859, one of the difficult problems faced by the school authorities in the Principalities was the standardisation of textbooks, the modernisation of their content and the generalisation of the Latin alphabet in their writing. In order to deal with it, the law of instruction provided for the new unified ministry to organise competitions for the production of school books. This competition was organised in 1865, with the aim of producing an "Abecedary", together with other textbooks for elementary education. The conditions were also formulated: "being books for the primary classes, they seek to be written in the most popular language possible; to be written according to the latest teaching methods [...]; not to be a reproduction or imitation with minor modifications of existing books adopted in schools, and in any case to be superior to existing books". A year later, the Permanent Council of Instruction found that the desired result could not be achieved and proposed that the competition be repeated. In 1864, the young Ion Creangă, then a deacon enrolled at the preparatory school of Trei Ierarhi in Iași, where his teacher and principal was Titu Maiorescu, was appointed by royal decree as a provisional teacher in the first class of the primary school of Trei Ierarhi. Thus began a long career in which the writer served passionately in teaching (even during his temporary dismissal between 1872 and 1874), until his illness worsened in the end of his life. The document is fully handwritten signed. Each teacher was obliged to fill in by hand the register when entering and leaving the classroom. For each line, the name of the teacher, the entry and exit times and the respective class are mentioned. The item is in a very good state of preservation.
