Internationally recognized, Adrian Ghenie is a complete artist, who manages with each work to combine political themes with art history, bringing the process into contemporaneity. His narratives navigate a multitude of current themes, which he synthesizes into a single figurative and abstract creative amalgam. His works are color clashes, a realm dedicated to various technical mediums, intertwined with the beam of reality and personal memories. Through his works, Ghenie precisely examines the current relationship between individual, technology, and consumerism, and seeks the motive for the erosion of modern being. The artist's painting has gone through several defining stages, showing his preference for multidisciplinary experiences, thus Ghenie changes the materiality of painting, and relies on hazard and dynamism. The series, which includes the work at hand, called "Nevermore," is based on influences from universal literature, incorporating a pronounced thematic diversity. These collages, which occupy an important place in his art, become ways in which we can observe the artist's world more closely and what he proposes to represent through it. Ghenie's interpretations are singular, provoking the viewer's imagination. Thus, the "Nevermore" series, created in 2020, brings together seven literary motifs. It is built similarly to a metatextual integration, which creates an innovative way of communication. The series of works retraces a narrative thread, which crosses important stages in the world of universal literature. The authors, whom Ghenie proposes to update, are known for their increased interest in human deepest feelings. Thus, the present work, titled "The Raven," is inspired by the narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, in which a talking raven visits a young man, who mourns the loss of his love, Lenore, and the disappearance of hope. The artwork also offers the title of the series, "Nevermore," the word repeatedly exclaimed by the raven. Thus, Ghenie's work is of psychological nature, looking to decode the threads of the human psyche. Using collage as the primary technique, Adrian Ghenie brings together several animal and plant forms into a single main figure, the raven. The bird is the focal point of the work, having a mysterious and silent allure, and it is the symbol of transition from one life stage to another, a fact that we can observe in the multitude of pieces from which it is constructed.
