The years 1899 – 1902 capture the artist Petrașcu at studies, in France, at the Julian Academy, where he studied with professors William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 – 1905) and Babriel Ferrier (1847 – 1914). This was a period of discoveries, when the young painter fervently visited the major museums and exhibitions, being impressed with the exhibitions of Rue Lafitte, the impressionists’ place for exhibition. His admiration for impressionism took him to Northern France, in Brittany, where he visited places such as Dinan, Morlaix, Saint Enogat, Saint Malo, or Vitré, where the master Nicolae Grigorescu had also been, not long before. At Vitré he was impressed by the architecture of the houses built in stone, by their tectonic solidity and by the picturesque resulting from the weather-worn aspect, as well as by the sober and restrained polychromy of the houses. He kept coming here until the late 20s, and the Vitré time also represented a chance for artistic growth, while his colourist qualities are admirably highlighted. (G.M.)
