Endowed with a rich contemplative vision of reality, along with a perpetual thirst for knowledge of natural environments, artist Samuel Mützner will be the author of a work of art based on description and chromatic sensitivity. During an era of turmoil and artistic revolutions, his creative work will remain, in spite of everything, in a stable balance. Travelling to the Far East to discover countries such as Japan, China, Korea, the Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka helped to teach new lessons in light and colour. He spent three years in Japan (1912-1915), during which time he travels to Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagasaki, as well as the nearby places, observing the most picturesque places up-close. He manifested great interest in physiognomies, attitudes, costumes, as well as landscapes. A significant part of the works created here are dedicated to the representation of Nipponese women. The grace of attire and gesture, the elegance of the costume, and the taste for the picturesque ender his creations decorative features, characteristic throughout the Japanese period. Along with the concern for the construction of the composition, in which the planes alternate and shapes are mainly aimed at the decorative effect, the artist's attention would also be directed towards chromaticism, which would see unprecedented liberties in terms of the choice of the brushwork and the chromaticism.
