The source of Nicolae Dărăscu’s drawing qualities can be identified in his biography when, while at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, he fiercely attended the drawing lessons given by the painter Dimitrie Serafim. Dărăscu also chose this part of the classes because the painting lessons received from G.D. Mirea or Ipolit Strâmbu did not resonate with his own artistic ego, especially as he remained deeply impressed by the art of Ștefan Luchian, diametrically opposed to the art of the two professors mentioned above. Later, in France, in the studio of Jean Paul Laurens, at the Julian Academy, and then in that of Luc Olivier Merson from the Académie de Beaux-Artes in Paris, Dărăscu encountered the limitations of painting in the studio, feeling as early as 1906-1907 that his true vocation was landscape, be it aquatic or typical. In these little biographic notes we discover the reasons why, after returning to Romania (after 1912), Dărăscu explored the most scenic landscapes of Romania.

Între 1916 și 1919, prin peregrinările din Dobrogea, Nicolae Dărăscu avea să picteze circa 4-5 opere dedicate nomazilor țigani și turci. Șatrele, așa cum le intitulează însuși artistul, sunt surprinse în compoziții edificatoare, iar operele ne introduc într-un pitoresc oriental. Inițiat în satul Pașacîșla de lângă Jurilovca, Tulcea, micul ciclu este pictat în vara anului 1916, pentru ca după Primul Război Mondial să mai picteze alte câteva compoziții asemănătoare.
