Credited as one of the best-selling contemporary Romanian artists, Adrian Ghenie paints through a brownian movement dictated by his inner states, canvases that abound in metaphors and symbols. However, his first creative period, which includes the work at hand, with an evident anachronistic character, was deeply influenced by classical art. His contact with the world of art is mediated through a neighbor from his hometown, who introduces Ghenie to painters such as Aivazovsky or Repin. She also notices and encourages his talent and becomes his first critic. In 2001, the artist graduated from the University of Art and Design in Cluj, mastering the technique and execution skills of classicism. With the discovery of the avant-garde, a major paradigm shift will take place in his work. In 2005, alongside his colleague, Mihai Pop, he founded the Plan B Gallery in Cluj, which was to become one of the epicenters of the city's artistic life. The gallery will later expand to Berlin, where the artist is now based. In 2007, the Gallery organized the Romanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and in 2015, Adrian Ghenie represented - with the project "Darwin’s Room" - Romania at the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale. His works, whose indisputable value is recognized globally, are in collections such as: Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (S.M.A.K), Ghent; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Málaga; Francois Pinault Collection, Venice; Hort Family Collection, New York; David Roberts Collection, London; Titze Collection, Paris; The George Economou Collection, Athens; The Sander Collection, Darmstadt. Among the records set by Adrian Ghenie, we mention: the painting "Pie Fight Interior 12", awarded with the sum of 8.089.280 euros at the Christie’s auction house in Hong Kong, "Degenerate Art" awarded for the amount of 7.362.264 euros at the Sotheby’s auction house in New York or "Nickelodeon" awarded for the amount of 7.041.959 euros at the Christie’s auction house in London. Over time, several of his works have managed to exceed the bid of 1,000,000 euros in various globally recognized auction houses. Currently, the Art Encounters Foundation in Timisoara hosts the artist's first solo exhibition in Romania in the past fourteen years: “The Impossible Body/Corpul Imposibil”. Through it, Adrian Ghenie invites the public to explore the relationship between human beings and technology and to examine the modern man's relationship with his own body and its finite temporal valences.
