Between 1896 and 1898 the Protestant community of Berlin, the capital of the German Empire, financed the construction by public subscription of a new and imposing church, the Trinitatis Kirche, built in the Charlottenburg district of the city. The inauguration of the edifice, held on December 11, 1898, was attended by the imperial couple Wilhelm II and his wife, Empress Augusta Victoria, who had sponsored the effort to raise funds and build the church. The architects who designed the place of worship and supervised the construction were Johannes Vollmer (1845-1920) and Heinrich Jassoy (1863-1939), known at the time for such achievements throughout Germany. Invited to attend the inauguration ceremony but not committing herself to the effort of a long journey, Queen Elizabeth of Romania rewarded the two architects with a gift of one such piece. The object represents a beautiful, large pipe with a central element made of ebony wood, with deer antler subassemblies and a Bavarian style hand-painted porcelain mouthpiece with chrome plated metal and brass lid. At the top, the faces of a decorative horn element support the cypher of Queen Elisabeth surmounted by the royal crown, the dates of the edifice's building (1896/98) and the name of the Berlin district of Charlottenburg.
