Octavian Angheluță was born in Brăila in 1904, but his father's profession as a mechanic for the railway company would move the Angheluță family through several cities in the Moldova region. During high school, he sent a full batch of works to the competition organized in Bucharest by Tinerimea Artistică society, for which he was awarded. Initially, he followed parallel courses of the School of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, but he eventually gave up the latter. He studied drawing with Artachino, and painting with G.D. Mirea and Camil Ressu. As a student, he was encouraged by artists such as Petrașcu, Tonitza or Pallady. He then started to consistently participate in the Official Salons, where his artistic merits were recognized with awards. After graduation, his life began to catch a brisk rhythm: he married another artist (a sculptor) – Elena Angheluță; he organized his first personal exhibition in 1931, in Câmpina; he taught drawing and calligraphy at the Monastic Seminar in Cernica, where he formed a close friendship with Ion Ţuculescu; he also had tangents with the avant-garde movement, collaborating with magazines such as "Urmuz" or "Contimporanul" and for a while, he held the position of director of the State Pinacotheca. He gave the human figure a central place in his work and often noted, in oil or pastel, the features of personalities such as Jean. Al. Steriade, Gh. Oprescu, Corneliu Baba or Lucian Grigorescu. He took components of his own personality, which he also identified in the model in front of the canvas, and subtly transcribed them into his works. His child portraits remind of the techniques and themes approached by Velasquez. Continuator of Mirea, Ressu or Tonitza in his search for playful portraiture, he often captured the faces of his own children - Getuța and Anton. He captures moments of absolute spontaneity and creates portraits at the most unexpected moments - at some point he immortalizes his daughter after an argument with her cousin, after which the father shouts at the girl "Stay like this!" And starts to transcribe, with a quick and lively line, the thought-flooded face of the daughter. Sometimes, to spark the interest of his small models, he claimed he was a relative of Santa Claus, the proof being his prominent beard. In this work, we find once again the face of Geta Angheluță, this time matured. Aged 24 at the time of the work's making, the painter's daughter was likely a fresh graduate just starting her path. Geta Angheluță will graduate from the Institute of Theatre and Film Art, and her career will be divided between artistic activity - she will act at the National Theatre in Timișoara, but also at the Nottara Theatre in Bucharest - and teaching: she will be a professor of acting art in Iași and Bucharest. After 1989, Geta Angheluță was one of the personalities who advocated for the reestablishment of the Theatre Faculty in Iași, also coordinating the first class of actors after this event.
