This painting project of the Amzei Church, an unfulfilled project for the three signing painters, is an original document that introduces us to the short career of Stefan Luchian as a church painter. The three churches painted by Luchian, all alongside his friend and colleague Constantin Artachino, were all made in the period 1897-1900, a tough period financially for both artists. The two would paint along with Constantin Pascali in 1898-1899 the St. Alexander Cathedral in Alexandria - their most well-known project; in 1897 the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tulcea and in 1900 the Brezoianu Church in Bucharest. The paintings from Tulcea and Bucharest no longer exist today, the first being an unfinished project by the two artists, later repainted by D. Marinescu, and today's Brezoianu Church was rebuilt after 1944, subsequently demolished during the communist period. The current project sketch, thought for decorating with paintings the naos and the dome of the Amzei Church, is co-signed by the architect Alexandru Săvulescu, who was at that time also the president of the Romanian Architects Society, as well as an architect at the Ministry of Public Instruction and Cults. The Amzei Church was completely rebuilt in the period 1898-1901, following Săvulescu's plans, but the final painting was to be done by Umberto Marchetti, the three signing painters Artachino-Luchian-Grimani not being winners of the proposed project.
