Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz stood out as a realist painter who focused on battle scenes, portraits, and landscapes in his work. Often, many of his compositions center around nature, particularly herds of animals captured outdoors: horses or buffalo. Educated in Krakow, Vienna and Munich, Ajdukiewicz spent short periods of time in various European capitals and cities where he completed various artistic commissions, but shortly after finishing his studies he returned to Poland and worked for a while as a farmer. In Vienna, he painted portraits for the aristocracy of the time, in Krakow he equally engaged with the same type of orders for the high society, but also with the creation of genre scenes or military scenes. In 1893, he completed a commission for the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII) in London, a fact that facilitated his integration into the aristocracy of Sofia in 1896. He also worked in Turkey, Saint Petersburg or Bucharest (1899). The work in question dates from 1914, the year when the painter joined the Polish army during the First World War. The aforementioned period corresponds to the long series dedicated to equestrian compositions, with soldiers caught in galloping, on horses; or with groups of cavalry seen at a walk, accompanying animals.
