The Ghiordes carpets originate from the city of Ghiorde (Gördes), North-East of Izmir, West of Anatolia. The prayer rugs from Ghiordes, together with those from Kula and Ladik have been cherished for a long time in the Middle East, as well as in Europe and the United States. The features of the Ghiordes rug include a fine acute arch, with prominent shoulders and two crossing panels, one of them above and the other one below the niche or mihrab. In late 19th century, Kiz-Ghiorde-type rugs (suggesting a girl’s dowry) became popular. After the 18th century, cotton was normally used for the weft of the Ghiordes carpets, while wool was preferred in the warp. The pile is generally made of wool or, rarely, of silk. After the turn of the 20th century, the quality of Ghiordes carpets declined. The symmetrical knot is often known, in specialized literature, as the Ghiordes or Turkish knot. This piece dates back to approximately 1800, and it is made of wool, on a wool warp. In the Mihrab (the prayer niche), a tree of life grows vertiginously, made up of vases and flowers.
