John Sigismund Zápolya was the first prince of Transylvania and an important figure in the transition of the kingdom of Hungary to a fragmented political structure, caught between the influence of the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburgs. Son of John I Zápolya, he was initially recognized as king of Hungary, but, following the treaty of Speyer in 1570, he officially renounced the royal title in favor of the title of "prince of Transylvania", thus establishing the foundations of the autonomous principality. His historical importance lies in the ability to maintain a delicate political balance in a region under strong external pressures, but also in the promotion of religious tolerance. During his reign, in 1568, the Edict of Torda was issued, the first act in Europe that guaranteed religious freedom for four confessions - a major step towards inter-confessional coexistence. Thus, John Sigismund Zápolya is an essential figure for the history of Transylvania, being the symbol of a beginning of political autonomy and of a climate of relative religious openness in an era dominated by confessional conflicts.
