Lucius Verus, co-emperor of the Roman Empire between the years 161 and 169 AD, alongside Marcus Aurelius, holds a special importance in the history of Rome, even if his figure is often overshadowed by that of his co-ruling partner. However, his contributions, especially in the military field, were essential for the defense and stability of the empire during that period. The importance of Lucius Verus is particularly remarkable through his leadership of the campaign against the Parthian Empire, one of the most powerful and persistent external threats to Rome in the East. Although he was not an experienced military leader at the time of his appointment, Lucius Verus was sent ahead of the Roman troops in the Parthian War (161–166 AD), benefiting from the support of capable generals. Under his command, the Roman army achieved major victories, culminating with the conquest of the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon, and the extension of Roman influence in the region. These successes strengthened Rome's position in the East and brought prestige to both emperors. Also, Lucius Verus played a significant role in maintaining political balance within the dual leadership, a rare situation in imperial history. Although he had a more hedonistic and less austere lifestyle than Marcus Aurelius, the collaboration between the two was, for the most part, harmonious. This co-governance demonstrated that the Roman Empire could be administered efficiently and shared, during a period full of external challenges. However, a negative event that marked Lucius Verus's reign was the spread of a severe epidemic - later known as the Antonine Plague - resulting from the Eastern campaign. This caused massive loss of human life and weakened the demographic of the empire, having lasting effects on the Roman economy and society. Lucius Verus died in 169 AD, while traveling with Marcus Aurelius, probably killed by the epidemic. His death was sincerely mourned by his colleague, which indicates a close relationship and mutual appreciation.
