Obverse: D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG ("Our Lord Justinian, Perpetual Emperor"), Emperor Justinian facing, in armor, carrying the globus cruciger in his right hand and the shield over his left shoulder; Reverse: VICTORIA AVGGG Θ (Victory of the Emperors) / CONOB (Constantinopolis Obryziacum), Angel facing, holding the decorated cross in his right hand and the globus cruciger in his left hand. To the right field, a star. Emperor Justinian I is known for his significant role in the history of the Byzantine Empire. During his reign between 527 and 565, he led a period of great territorial expansion and remarkable legislative achievements. One of Justinian's greatest contributions was the codification of Roman laws into his famous Codex Justinianus, Digesta, Institutiones and Novellae. These represented a compilation and unification of Roman legislation, establishing the basis of Byzantine law that profoundly influenced the legal development in Europe throughout the centuries. In addition to his legislative contributions, Justinian pursued an expansive policy of restoring the empire's borders. Under the command of his talented general Belisarius, Byzantium recovered many previously lost territories in the western Mediterranean, including Italy and parts of Spain. Moreover, Justinian was a patron of the arts and architecture, being responsible for the construction of the most famous Byzantine cathedral, Hagia Sophia in Constantinopol (present day Istanbul), an architectural masterpiece still recognized today.
