Stater type coins, in the name of Lysimachus, struck posthumously represent an especially important category of monetary artifacts, both from a historical and archaeological point of view. Although King Lysimachus reigned during 306-281 BC, his name continued to be used on coins minted long after his death, indicating the enduring prestige of his political and military figure in the Hellenistic world.
These coins, of Macedonian inspiration, are distinguished by their specific iconography: on the obverse appears the idealized portrait of Alexander the Great (with deified features, wearing ram horns, associated with the god Ammon), and on the reverse, the goddess Athena in a seated position, holding a victory (Nike) and a spear, alongside the legend "ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ" (LISIMACOU BASILEOS). Although minted decades after the death of Lysimachus, these coins had the purpose of instilling confidence in monetary circulation, valuing a royal image recognized and respected.
The importance of these posthumous staters delves deeply into the economic and commercial realities of the era. Byzantion, strategically located at the intersection of trade routes between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea, issued such coins to support international trade and to response to the demand for strong currency in the region. This also explains their wide distribution, including north of the Danube.
The discovery of these coins on the current territory of Romania, especially in archaeological contexts from the Dobrogea area and even inside the Carpathian arch, attests to the existence of close commercial and cultural ties between the Greek cities on the Pontic coast and the local Geto-Dacian communities.
