The outcome of Iosef Iser's encounter with the Dobrudjan seam was transmuted, in 1913, to over two hundred paintings, drawings and pastels. The artist would be attracted to the areas with a strong Oriental influence and would dedicate an extended period of time to studying the traditions and customs of the Turkish minority living by the Black Sea. From the same pictorial theme, the odalisque series would emerge later down the line, and they would remain ingrained in his public's collective memory. Iser confessed his passion for the Dobrudjan theme, through an extended series of portraits dedicated to Tatars. He sketches them following their true languid nature and often captures them in standstill statuary postures. In his seaside paintings he describes highly expressive Oriental faces, costumes and landscapes. He constructs all these works in a dim, dry chromatic, similar to Dobrudjan nature. He pays particular attention to drawing and studies thoroughly the representation of the human figure. He works with well-defined rhythms and he focuses on achieving graphic unity. He registers events as an active witness, offering us true history pages. The faces he sketches are almost architecturally ordered and are obviously burdened with inner tension. Both the Dobrudjan landscape and the human archetype of the region had a strong impact on Iosef Iser, offering him the necessary means to paint an Oriental fairytale world using a stern chromatic.
